Iberia Launches Free Starlink Wi-Fi on First Aircraft
The new system uses Starlink’s low‑Earth‑orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, which currently operates more than 10,400 satellites. The network delivers broadband speeds of up to 500 Mbps and maintains latency between 25 and 60 milliseconds, allowing multiple devices to connect simultaneously. Iberia’s press release notes that the service will support high‑bandwidth activities such as live streaming, video calls, online gaming, web browsing and remote work, providing a “home‑like connectivity experience” for passengers.
Iberia’s rollout of Starlink Wi‑Fi is part of its Flight Plan 2030, a strategic investment program that will allocate €6 billion over the next decade. The plan targets annual profitability between 13.5 % and 15 % and includes spending on customer experience, artificial intelligence, fleet renewal and the development of Ciudad Iberia, an aviation innovation hub. The airline said the free Wi‑Fi service will reinforce its commitment to innovation and digitalisation, two pillars of the plan.
The initiative follows a partnership announced by the International Airlines Group (IAG) that covers several of its carriers, including British Airways, Vueling, Aer Lingus and LEVEL. According to a June 24 press release, Iberia will begin deploying the service fleet‑wide in 2026. At the time of the first flight, 0 of Iberia’s 110 aircraft were confirmed to be Starlink‑equipped, indicating that the rollout will proceed gradually.
The introduction of satellite‑based connectivity marks a first for a Spanish flag carrier. While other airlines have experimented with in‑flight internet, Iberia’s use of Starlink provides global coverage, including remote regions such as the poles, where traditional satellite services are limited. The system’s low‑latency design is expected to improve the passenger experience on long‑haul routes, where connectivity has historically been a challenge.
Iberia’s Director of Customer Experience, Beatriz Guillén, said the airline was “delighted to become the first Spanish airline to offer the fastest onboard internet connection currently available on the market.” She added that the service would enhance the experience for business and leisure travelers alike.
The company’s next steps include expanding the Starlink network to additional aircraft and integrating the technology with its existing in‑flight entertainment and service platforms. Iberia will monitor usage patterns and passenger feedback to refine the offering. The airline has not yet disclosed a timetable for full fleet coverage, but the June 24 announcement confirms that the rollout will begin in 2026.
In summary, Iberia has launched a free, high‑speed satellite internet service on its first Starlink‑equipped aircraft, marking a milestone for Spanish aviation. The initiative aligns with the airline’s €6 billion Flight Plan 2030 and is expected to roll out across the fleet over the coming years. The company will continue to report on the deployment progress and assess the impact on customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
